It's Christmas Time!

Well I’ll be darned!

December 1st!  Christmas comes the same time every year and yet it always seems to sneak up fast!

Which is fine by me! In my opinion, I could celebrate Christmas everyday for the rest of my life.  Big fan over here.  We certainly didnt wait until December 1st to put our decorations up.

I cant really pin point exactly when my love for Christmas started.  I do recall some Christmas eve’s as a child at my grandparents sitting in their family room toasty warm by the wood burning fire place.  Bellies full from our turkey feast and endless amounts of short bread cookies (made with margarine, of course) listening to CBC radio for the Santa Tracker.

“Oh! He’s in New York!  That’s only 6 hours away from us!”

Listening intently on his worldly whereabouts knowing that we better get to bed soon before Santa gets here.

My grandma always had little bowls of mixed nuts everywhere with the old school nutcracker resting on the bowl.  My grandpa would talk your ear off, talking too close to your face with his hot turkey breath, spitting pieces of nuts on you. Earlier in the evening we would have listened to a Christmas music performance by my grandparents.  Grandma on her guitar, grandpa on the piano (playing with his one hand, he’d lost an arm in the Second World War).

That night it would be so hard to sleep from all the excitement and sugar.  I’d wake up at some ungodly hour and have to force myself to stay in bed to a more reasonable hour. And, then… finally! Time to get up!  Rush to the living room to see the magic!  The room dimly lit with the glow of the lights on the tree. The cats stretching from being curled up on the rocking chair.  There would be Santa’s snowy footprints on the floor! (made with icing sugar)  All the cookies we’d set out for Santa would be eaten with a few crumbs left on the plate, a half eaten carrot stick for Rudolph and a note from the man himself!  It was pure magic! And now I get to relive all that magic through the eyes of my children.

Those are the warm fuzzy magic feelings I love so much about Christmas.  The sparkling lights, the festive colours, the joyous music, the parties, the singing and dancing. Making cookies, pancakes, chocolates.  Making presents, breakfast with Santa and visiting Santa for story time, watching Christmas movies.  The activities like Vivaldi by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra with my mom (8 years counting now).  Kyle and I run a 5km Elf run through Stanley Park with the kids bundled up in the stroller, usually on the stormiest, wettest, coldest December day.

We go hiking in the snow and pulling the kids in sleds.

As much as Kyle and I are no stranger to treats, Ive decided to do an activity Advent calendar this year instead of the chocolate ones.  Day 1: we made Santa pancakes and decorated the Christmas tree in our communal space in the community that we live in, and we did family band practice of Christmas songs.  Kyle on his guitar, me on my ukelele and the kids on various instruments, drums, tambourine, jingle bells.  Gunnar is already so excited to see what Day 2 will bring… I actually forget what it is so it will be a surprise for me too!

We are developing our own family traditions and every year keeps getting better and better.

Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, I hope you enjoy some time in whatever way brings you some peace, some joy, some feeling of togetherness.

Merry Holidays everyone!
